About Us

The Donegal Cycle Route
Welcome to the DCR, a 200km scenic route which forms part of the National Cycle Network. The route links the National Cycle Network North West Trail in Donegal Town to the National Cycle Network Sustrans Route 92 in Newtown Cunningham. The DCR aslo forms part of the Eurovelo European Cycling Network, Route 1.
The Donegal Cycle Route will bring you around our beautiful coastline and through some of our County’s most spectacular landscapes. In order to plan your journey the cycle route has been broken down into 14 Sections or Stages. It will take you into or close to the services and tourist centres of Mountcharles, Inver, Ardara, Dungloe, Loughanure, Crolly, Dunlewey, Creeslough, Glen, Milford, Ramelton and Letterkenny. Look out for signed spurs along the route to the nearby towns of Burtonport, Gortahork and Dunfanaghy. There are also a number of signed cycle loops for you to explore such as The Dooey Loop in Leitirmacaward, The Maghery Lop in Dungloe and The Bunlin Way Loop at Milford. Remember you are in the Hills of Donegal and some sections may be more challenging than others! The maps have elevations profiles of all the stages to help plan your journey.
In developing this route Donegal County Council worked with the National Sustainable Transport Office (NSTO) and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport to try and bring cyclists along quiet, safe and scenic local roads. The Route follows Class 2 & 3 county roads as much as possible but there are occasions where the Route has no alternative but to use sections of major roads. Donegal County Council and its partners in the NSTO, NRA, NRDO and at local level will endeavour over the coming years to add to the route and develop dedicated cycleways where possible. We ask cyclists to plan ahead, be aware of other road traffic at all times and to obey the rules of the road, on all classes of road used.
